Mavis Baker

The interplay of body and mind and the quest for balance have remained a constant in my life.  Yoga, which I began in my teens, has nurtured and sustained me throughout my life, and while the natural world has always been my home, the challenges of living in the world have taken me in many rewarding and rich directions.

My self-designed major in multicultural studies at Antioch College gave me the tools to interact with the cultures of Egypt, Bali, and Portugal, where I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) with the American Cultural Council, a U.S. Embassy school, and back in the states at Spring International Language Center. My role, in addition to instruction, was curriculum development and the mentoring of teacher candidates from the University of Colorado’s Graduate School of Education.

In all of my different experiences in education, what has become clear to me is the centrality of curriculum development as an authentic tool in the transmission of learning. Some of my curriculum development projects include English as a Second Language (ESL) and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) for the Office of Refugee Resettlement and the Vietnamese community of New Orleans; Community Action Problem Solving for Front Range Earth Force, a national service learning non-profit; an Intensive English Program at Spring International Language Center for English language learners preparing for higher education; and the co-creating and teaching of a Parent – Infant education program for the Montessori Children’s House of Denver.

In addition to my work in education, my experience includes communications within the business community and its markets. At Crown Media International, my primary role was to provide affiliate support to emerging international markets. As a multi-media architect and producer at the Baby Einstein Company, my work included production and coordination of trade show promotions.

Joining the School of Inner Health allows me the opportunity to apply the skills that I’ve learned in education and communications to a field that connects to my personal values and beliefs.  The inner connectedness of the biodynamic principles with the full expression of healing resonates with my Kundalini yoga practice, my deep bond with the natural world, my commitment to education, and my sense of purpose.
